Obama speaks on immigration and answers little

President Obama addressed the nation on immigration this Thursday. Reuters posted a full transcript of the speech. I selected my favorite parts to share with you guys below.

“But today, our immigration system is broken, and everybody knows it.”

True.

“And undocumented immigrants who desperately want to embrace those responsibilities see little option but to remain in the shadows, or risk their families being torn apart.”

Mhmm.

“It’s been this way for decades. And for decades, we haven’t done much about it.”

Yup.

“When I took office, I committed to fixing this broken immigration system.”

Yeah..

Okay I’ll stop being snarky and give you guys the good stuff:

President Obama announced that he will make it easier for “high-skilled” immigrants to become legal, add additional law enforcement at the borders, and “deal responsibly with the millions of undocumented immigrants who already live in our country.”

So how if the third listed goal going to work? Obama says if you’ve been in America for more than five years, you’re golden. Also if you have kids born here and if you can pass a criminal background check and pay taxes, you’re good too- for now.

This will be interesting to see considering there isn’t much of a paper trial for someone who’s been living in the shadows for fear of deportation- much less five years of it. How are undocumented immigrants to prove this?

To be honest this answered little and seems more of something to keep press busy while Obama comes up with something concrete- if he ever does.
